Description

This is Smith & Wesson's premium AR-15 with a mid-length gas system, and has some much nicer features than the Sport II model. Smith & Wesson also partnered with MagPul on this AR-15, and it is MagPul marked on the right side of the lower reciever. It might not be as rare as MagPul's china doll lowers, but it's still pretty neat. You are getting a great price at gunprime as MSRP is $1099.  If you are looking for a premium AR-15 at a huge discount gunprime has the S&W M&P15 MOE MID Length Carbine. The Magpul furniture feels great in your hand.

Better than expected

This is my first time dealing with Gunprime. Great experience. The firearm was nicer than I expected it to be. I had not seen the firearm prior to buying. I was quite impressed with the shipping time and the communication. I received a great sale price. I would definitely buy from Gumprime again

You get what you pay for.

First, this is my first AR15. I have owned guns and been around guns all my life, but this is the first time I've bought a brand new, state-of-the-art, not inherited or gifted by a relative, modern firearm. So, take my review with a grain of salt. I am not an experienced AR15 owner/builder/buyer, and I don't paint myself as one. This was definitely a learning experience.

Let's start with the good. I LOOOOVE the furniture. Magpul makes great stuff. I personally love FDE. I love the way this firearm looks. When I was searching around for the perfect gun to buy, I even thought that the FSB looked good in this configuration. I have since changed my mind about that, which I will detail below.

Now for the bad.

God do I hate Front Sight Bases. I didn't know that I did, but I do. I really really do. If you purchase an AR15 with an FSB, know that it will be in the way of any decent optic you put on the firearm. So unless you LIKE cowitness sighting (or if you even know what that is, I certainly didn't) or you are okay with another 2 pounds of riser to bring the optic above the sight line of the FSB, which has ruined my cheek weld and my general comfort of shooting this firearm for long periods of time, or you plan to use just good ol' iron sights and no optics, I do not recommend ANY AR15 with an FSB. If you have never owned an AR15 (like myself) or you've never had one with an FSB, and you even think there is a possibility of that it will annoy you the way it annoys me, understand that removing it is extremely difficult (read: not worth your time or money). The FSB is combination front sight post and gas block, and is therefore pinned to the barrel. So you would have to remove and replace it with a different gas block, or if you don't possess the skills/tools to do this yourself, take it to a gun smith and pay them to do it. Also, it should be noted that the handguard on this particular AR15 is designed to fit around an FSB, and uses a handguard retainer that buts up against the FSB.

In short, if you aren't DAMNED SURE you want an FSB, and you're not ready to die on that hill, buy an AR15 with a free floating handguard and get a flip up front sight.

Finally, I cannot speak to whether this is normal for S&W M&P15s, if it's normal for this model, or it's just how MY gun came off the assembly line, but my upper and lower fit together very loosely. Frankly, they rattle when I handle the rifle. Other tolerances seem to be out of spec, or perhaps just stacked on top of one another, because the first time I took the rifle out to the range, I fired a full magazine without a single problem, swapped in the next mag, and round number 2 was an immediate fail-to-fire. Long story short, my hammer and trigger pins walked constantly, specifically, the hammer pin walked itself so far out that the entire fire control assembly leaned in, and the hammer rode the inner wall of the lower receiver on the way to the firing pin, resulting in the fail-to-fire malfunction. I eventually replaced them with anti-walk pins, changed the trigger to a JARD Set Trigger Drop-In (which I love and highly recommend) and have fired over 400 rounds since without a single malfunction. So, besides the shaky start, the gun goes bang when you want it to. Can't complain about that.

As a footnote, I should mention the largest factor for my decision to purchase this rifle is it was on sale. MSRP for $1260, I bought it for $800. Even with the problems I have had, and solved, and my distaste for the FSB, this rifle was worth the 800 dollar price tag. Not super sure I would recommend buying it for anything more than that. Also, it's not longer in production, so whatever inventory is out there, that's all that's left.

If I could do it all over again, I would purchase an AR15 without the FSB and with a free floating handguard. In the future, I am likely to do exactly that, and turn this gun into an iron-sights-only plinker, or sell it to some other sucker. 3 stars for the tolerance problems I've had and that damn FSB

Out of the box credibility

Had for a few months now and it shoots incredibly right out of the box. Shipping was much faster than expected with the country being pretty much shut down. Very happy with product and service. Would and have recommended Gun Prime to others.
