When every shop has increased their prices to pandemic status (price gouging), Gunprime’s price remind pretty much the same. I saw a sweet deal and would buy again from them.
I am very happy with my purchase of the FN 509C MRD 9mm. This gun feels great, shoots accurate and fast and is optics ready. I previously own an FN FNS 40 Cal and have been very happy with that gun. The 509C is a smaller version and chambered in 9mm which is the most accessible ammunition available. I have an optic ordered and am excited to fit it to the firearm. I also ordered an aftermarket barrel which is threaded to fix a suppressor. Extremely pleased with this purchase. Gunprine delivered my gun to my FFL within 3 days of placing my order. I really appreciate the quick turnaround and will order from Gunprime again.
Fn 509 compact is a great pistol.. love it and recommend it!!
I've owned this pistol for a couple months now, but due to the pandemic have only had a chance to get it to the range a half-dozen times. Overall, I like the design and feel. Recoil is easily handled and it performs very well. The springs in the mags were extremely stiff to start, but they've softened a bit now, which makes loading easier. The only negative I have on this firearm is the trigger. It's a bit on the heavy side, which works against the short barrel length. It has loosened a little bit after putting a couple hundred rounds through it, but I would have liked to have seen a smoother, easier pull weight overall. I plan to reach out to an FN-authorized gunsmith to see if they can do anything with it. Other than that, it's been very accurate and easy to handle, especially with +P rounds.
Glad I made the purchase. Have not shot it yet but received it from gunprime.com for way below the selling price. This is my every day carry instead of my glock. I also add a red dot to the rail.
Gunprime.com's service was excellent! I will be a repeat customer.
Executive summary: I have been looking for a do-everything pistol for quite a while. Although I would prefer a traditional double action, what I am looking for was more easily found with a striker fired pistol. Despite the cons listed below, my experience with this pistol has been very good and I am pleased with the gun's performance and features. I would make the same purchase again.
My individual thoughts on this FN 509 Compact MRD if you are interested:
- Optics ready
- Handles recoil like a larger pistol
- Comes stock with suppressor height / optic co-witness height sights
- Features fully ambidextrous controls*
- Appears to the layman to be well made (no machining marks, tight feel, etc.)
- Price (if you can get the deal I got from Gunprime in January 2020)
- Price (if you pay MSRP)
- No longer FN's latest 509 Compact now that the compact tactical is offered. However, I prefer this model.
- Rumored striker issues with some of the 509 models; unconfirmed by this reviewer
- Only two magazines for the price
- Not as small as some compact pistols
- Spare magazine prices
- *Ambidextrous magazine release protrudes into shooting hand at times
- Finding a holster (at the time of this review)
I was looking for an optics ready compact pistol in late 2019 and narrowed the search down to this model, the CZ P10C OR, and the SIG 365 XL. This gun fit me best and offered the most features from the factory. This is my first FN America product. Installation of a Trijicon RMR I added was straightforward.
As of this review, the pistol has 450 rounds through it. 350 were Blazer Brass 124 grain (my standard target round), 50 were a combination of Federal HST 124 grain and 147 grain, and 50 were Winchester 115 grain. The gun operated flawlessly with the two heavier bullets. There were a few slide lock failures with the 115 grain bullets.
If you spend anytime on FN forums, you will see posts about broken strikers for some users. This possibility of failure is completely unacceptable in what I plan to use as a self-defense tool. It is for that reason that I ordered a heavy duty striker from Apex Tactical at the same time I ordered the gun. This is why I noted to "budget an extra $50" in the headline. Swapping out the factory striker with the Apex striker is a simple process.
Note: It took a lot of research but I found that ANR Design was able to make a holster that accommodates the optic and a Streamlight TLR7a.
I have both the mid size and the compact. I really like them both but this one is easier to carry for me. The only thing is I wished it had a threaded barrel.
I was skeptical about ordering from gun prime because I've never heard of them and the price reduction on this gun was too good to be true. After reading reviews I decided to place and order. I got and email the same day saying my gun was shipped and I actually recieved it 2 days later at my ffl. I must note that this was amid covid 19 price gouge, limited stock and outrageous lead times. GUN PRIME came through for me with a quality product and in a speedy time frame. Will definitely shop again!!!
