Description

The Smith & Wesson Model of 1917 revolver is a classic firearm that has proven itself in both World Wars. This particular revolver is a later production model with a serial number in the 119xxx range. It shows the "Eagle over 24" and Flaming Bomb ordnance acceptance marks rather than the earlier styles. These marks are important indicators of its military service history.

One exciting feature of this revolver is the set of British-proof marks present on the right side of the barrel. These marks indicate that this revolver was supplied under Lend Lease, which is likely given its military markings. A small "NOT ENGLISH MAKE" is also present on the right receiver flat, further underscoring its foreign origins.

Despite its military service, this revolver is in very good condition. The finish is excellent, with only minor scratches along the barrel marking the surface. The classic Smith & Wesson "motor oil" blue is still present and adds to its appeal. The wood grips are also in excellent condition, with only minor dings. The presence of a lanyard loop adds to its military history.

All mechanical functions of this revolver work as they should, with the trigger functioning smoothly and the ejector rod running true. The lockup is tight, which is a testament to its build quality. One notable modification is that the original chamber has been reamed to accept .45 Long Colt ammunition rather than the original chambering. This is a common modification for surplus revolvers like this one.

This Smith & Wesson Model of 1917 revolver is an attractive and historically significant firearm. Its provenance in both World Wars adds to its appeal, and its excellent condition and functional mechanics make it a desirable addition to any collection.
